On New Year's Eve, December 31st, 1972, Roberto Clemente chartered a plane for a humanitarian mission to earthquake-striken Nicaragua. Even though Clemente had some initial concerns about the plane's safety, he flew. Clemente's flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff, killing him and all four crew members. Researchers have discovered the area where the plane crashed but there was no recovery of the wreckage. Today, Clemente is recognized as one of the few baseball immortals to ever live.
